Safety & Warnings
According to Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand and Young (second edition), concerns about Tarragon’s estragole (methyl chavicol) content and genotoxicity are based on high oral doses in animal studies. However, daily topical use may still pose a hepatotoxic risk. Tarragon essential oil should be used only for acute situations and short periods of time. It is considered safe for the skin when used at very low dilutions—no more than 0.1%, which equals approximately 0.5 drops per ounce of carrier oil—and only occasionally. The oil also contains methyl eugenol, which may inhibit blood clotting, so caution is advised for those on anticoagulant medications or with bleeding disorders. While estragole is not formally contraindicated during pregnancy, it is advised to avoid use while breastfeeding, as its antiplatelet activity may allow it to pass into breast milk. Some sources also recommend avoiding use during pregnancy due to its spasmolytic effect on the uterus. Always consult a qualified practitioner for guidance in clinical or sensitive situations.
