Hydrosols are aromatic waters with therapeutic properties.
They’re created with steam distillation (like many essential oils). During the process, plant material is loaded into a still with water. When heat is applied, the steam releases the plant’s essential oil, and the water becomes infused with the plant’s water-soluble properties.
Hydrosols offer therapeutic benefits, without the safety concerns we need to be aware of when using essential oils. Hydrosols are so gentle that they can be used for children, babies, and pets.
Some hydrosols are also excellent natural cleaners. Use them alone or in blends to freshen your air, linens, and upholstery. Or spritz them around your kitchen to keep your counters and surfaces fresh between sanitizing sessions. Each hydrosol is versatile, but you’ll find specific suggestions for using several of them below.

Some hydrosols you can work with include:
1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Relaxing and reassuring, lavender is a great ingredient for linen and upholstery sprays.
2. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
Refreshing, energizing peppermint hydrosol is perfect in surface cleaners, or all by itself.
3. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Eucalyptus hydrosol is clarifying and breath-opening, and works well in shower stall spray cleaners.
4. Blood Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Blood orange hydrosol is bright and fruity, the perfect air freshener!
5. Lemon Thyme (Thymus × citriodorus)
Herbaceous and lemony, lemon thyme hydrosol is powerful for helping to reduce microbes on surfaces.
