Vanilla Oleoresin

Vanilla planifolia

Our organically crafted, 30-fold vanilla oleoresin is made by extracting the essential oils and other naturally occurring plant material from the wildcrafted bourbon vanilla bean pod via an organic solvent (ethanol) in a controlled, pressurized environment. The solvent is then removed using a vacuum process. The resulting semi-solid vanilla concentrate is dramatically thicker than an essential oil, although it does contain some essential oil from the vanilla bean pods used in the extraction. We love using vanilla oleoresin in body butter, salt scrubs, lip balms, massage oil blends, and numerous other DIY aromatherapy products, as it provides such a comforting, rich vanilla aroma. As this vanilla is an oleoresin, it is water-soluble and will dissolve in water but not in oil, although it does infuse beautifully into certain carriers such as jojoba.

Benefits and uses

The long, green, freshly-picked vanilla bean pods from the Vanilla planifolia vine are carefully fermented over a period of time prior to extraction. The vanilla oleoresin produced is a dark, luscious brown color, and thicker in viscosity than honey. This oleoresin is concentrated at 30-fold, rather than the more commonly available 10-fold. Vanilla oleoresin is almost 100% moisture free, which means it does not easily oxidize and will remain in excellent therapeutic condition for years and years, if stored properly in a dark space at room temperature. However, if stored in the refrigerator it will crystallize and will need to be brought to room temperature before blending.

We love putting a small dime-sized dollop into 16 ounces of jojoba and letting the vanilla oleoresin infuse into the jojoba oil for about a week or longer. Vanilla infused carrier oils are lovely to blend with, as the carrier takes on a gentle, exquisite vanilla aroma after the infusion process is complete. You can easily reuse this dollop of vanilla in another infusion or in a new aromatherapy blend. Therapeutically, vanilla oleoresin can help support a healthy digestive system.

Emotionally and energetically, vanilla oleoresin encourages and calms. It can help alleviate feelings of anxiousness and help balance the body, mind, and spirit, especially during more challenging times. It is incredibly uplifting, especially when one is experiencing situational anxiety or depression. This oleoresin is often used to heighten the senses and is popular in blends for spicing things up in the bedroom.

The production of Vanilla Oleoresin involves an alcohol extraction of Vanilla beans, followed by removal of the alcohol by distillation in a vacuum. The oleoresin remaining after alcohol evaporation is a dark, luscious brown and is thicker than honey.
