NATURAL CLEANING GUIDE - Chapter 1
The benefits of cleaning with essential oils
Making your own cleaning products is healthy, sustainable, and affordable.
Cleaning your home keeps it neat and tidy, reduces the presence of germs, and creates a more inviting, comfortable atmosphere.
Unfortunately, a lot of cleaning products are made with toxic chemicals that not only harm germs—they can harm us, too.
According to the American Lung Association...
“Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer… VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and other chemicals released when using cleaning supplies contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches.”
Some products they’ve identified that can cause health issues include:
- “Aerosol spray products, including health, beauty, and cleaning products;
- “Air fresheners;
- “Chlorine bleach;
- “Detergent and dishwashing liquid;
- “Dry cleaning chemicals;
- “Rug and upholstery cleaners;
- “Furniture and floor polish; and
- “Oven cleaners.”
Ironically, the products we use to clean our homes and stay healthy, can actually make us more vulnerable to feeling sick.
Harmful cleaning products can also damage the environment.
The United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) notes that even when we’re using cleaning products according to their labels, the dangerous chemicals contained in them are released into our environment—they linger in the air in our homes, remain on our surfaces, and rinse away into our water systems.
The EPA concludes that…
“Choosing less hazardous products that have positive environmental attributes (e.g., biodegradability, low toxicity, low VOC content, reduced packaging, low life cycle energy use)... can improve indoor air quality, and reduce water and ambient air pollution.”
