The beautifully aromatic, green leaves of the Nepeta cataria plant create a strong, sweet, and herbaceous essential oil. In addition to being useful in insect repellent sprays, this wonderful oil is also an excellent choice when looking to reduce nervousness or anxiety and can help relieve headaches caused by nervous tension. Its sedative properties can also come in handy when needing to calm the body and mind to get a good night's rest. Catnip essential oil is also antispasmodic, making it useful in helping relieve muscle cramps as well as other spasming issues such as spastic coughing.
For catnip to be useful for bug repellent, it must be high in the ester nepetalactone. This chemical component is the key and differentiates it from the more mild catnip that cats love. We like to add the essential oil to a hydrosol blend. Add to a 100 ml-peppermint or catnip hydrosol spray bottle and tuck away in your backpack. You can also add cedarwood atlas and experiment using other known repellents such as eucalytpus citriodora. Enjoy this natural alternative for effective bug repellent with a delicious aroma!
