Benefits and uses

The wood of the Bursera graveolens tree creates a warm, radiant, woody, smoky, sweet, and spicy essential oil. Only the branches and trunks that have naturally separated from the tree are collected and used in distillation. The harvesters are careful not to damage the surrounding areas around the fallen tree parts while they are wild crafting. There is no waste of the harvested wood, with every piece either used for distillation or used as incense. In addition to its popular use for ceremonies and meditation purposes, palo santo essential oil is also excellent for encouraging healthy lung function, especially when dealing with minor coughs, congestion, or asthma. Often, this essential oil is selected for its skin nourishing properties, as well as to help ease unwanted muscle spasms. Try combining a few drops of frankincense carterii with a few drops of palo santo essential oil in a carrier or inhaler to help quiet a headache or offset an oncoming migraine.

Emotionally and energetically, palo santo essential oil centers and encourages focus. It is often used to promote deeper meditation, provide emotional and physical protection, clear negative energy, and foster greater inner unity.

Safety & Warnings

D-limonene oxidizes easily. If oxidized, it may cause irritation or sensitization. Tisserand recommends maximum dermal use of 3.4% due to the menthofuran and pulegone content, which has hepatotoxic concerns.
